Fleas, since they consume blood, are a wonderful intermediate host of many parasites that can ruin your pet's health, especially in cats. In cats, fleas can carry a parasite called hemobartonella that live in and destroy red blood cells. In the Middle Ages and even now in the American southwest, fleas are also the source for the plague caused by a bacterium, yersinia pestis.

Few names cause more instant alarm than that of the Black Widow, and while usually misleading this spider has earned every bit of its name by often devouring their male counterpart while mating. Equipped with a venomous bite that is estimated fifteen times more potent that the average rattlesnake; the Black Widow is hand down the most toxic creature found within the United States.

One October afternoon as I shifted my books to the other arm and started up the hill toward the house, cows were the farthest thing from my mind. The sky was color of the turquoise dress my mother liked to wear to church, and the air—filled with the scent of old leaves, ripe wild grapes growing in the fenceline and plums that had fallen to the ground and split open—felt so warm that if I didn’t know better, I would think it was summer.
